Eve Smart Home Troubleshooting: Matter, Thread and Not Responding
Eve devices have no Eve cloud and no bridge: Thread models talk locally to a hub in your home that is both a Matter controller and a Thread border router (Eve: Upgrade to Matter, Eve: Compatible hubs). So when an Eve accessory says No Response, the fix is almost always the device, the hub or the Thread network between them, not an account. This guide follows Eve’s and Apple’s own support pages: quick fixes, the hubs Eve lists, the one-way Upgrade to Matter, sharing with a second platform, Thread coverage and resets.
Quick answer
Fix Eve Energy, Motion, Door & Window or Light Switch showing No Response, plus hubs, the Upgrade to Matter and reset steps, from Eve and Apple.

Quick answers
- Accessory shows No Response? Reboot it (remove the batteries or unplug it for a minute), reboot every hub and Thread border router, wait 5 minutes, then restart your phone with any VPN or iCloud Private Relay off (Eve: Support and Matter FAQ).
- Which hub do I need? One that is a Matter controller and a Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub (2nd gen), a compatible Echo, eero 6 or newer, or SmartThings Hub v3 (Eve: Compatible hubs).
- Should I upgrade to Matter? Only if you want Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings. Eve says it is optional for Apple-only homes and cannot be undone (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
- Battery sensors keep dropping out? Add a plugged-in Eve device such as Eve Energy or Eve Light Switch; they relay Thread traffic, while battery sensors are endpoints (Eve: Eve Energy support, Eve: Eve Motion support).
- Can’t re-add after a reset? A Matter-upgraded device needs the Matter Setup Code saved in the Eve app, not the HomeKit code on the label (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
What Eve needs to work
Eve’s Matter devices need an iPhone or iPad on the latest iOS/iPadOS or an Android device on 8.1 or later, plus a hub of your chosen platform that acts as a Matter controller and Thread border router (Eve: Eve Energy support, Eve: Compatible hubs). Eve’s hub list includes:
| Platform | Hubs Eve lists |
|---|---|
| Apple Home | Apple TV 4K (2nd gen, 3rd gen 128 GB), HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini |
| Google Home | Google TV Streamer, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro |
| Amazon Alexa | Echo (4th gen), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd gen or later), Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), Echo Studio and other listed Echo models |
| eero | eero 6, 6+, 7, Max 7, Pro 6, Pro 6E, Pro 7 |
| SmartThings | SmartThings Hub v3, SmartThings Station, Aeotec hubs and select Samsung TVs |
| Home Assistant and Homey | Home Assistant Green with Connect ZBT-1 or ZBT-2, Home Assistant Yellow (with the Matter and OpenThread add-ons); Homey Pro and Pro mini |
Check Eve’s page for the current list before buying a hub (Eve: Compatible hubs). Our Thread border router guide compares the common options, and Matter vs Thread explained covers the basics.
Eve accessory says No Response
Eve’s steps for a Matter accessory that is not responding (Eve: Support and Matter FAQ):
- Soft reboot the accessory: take out the batteries or unplug it for 1 minute.
- Reboot all hubs and Thread border routers by unplugging them for a minute, then wait 5 minutes.
- Restart your phone and try again, without a VPN or iCloud Private Relay.
- If it still does not respond, contact Eve support.
Apple’s checklist for Apple Home adds (Apple: If your HomeKit or Matter accessory isn’t responding):
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and check the maker’s app (the Eve app) for firmware updates.
- Restart your home hubs.
- If you have Thread accessories from other makers, Apple suggests unplugging them for 5 minutes, plugging them back in and waiting 10 minutes for the Thread network to settle.
- As a last step, remove the accessory, reset it and add it again.
- Check whether a VPN or security software on your phone is getting in the way.
If several Eve devices drop at once, the hub or Thread network is the likely link; see Apple Home hub and No Response fixes.
The Upgrade to Matter (HomeKit to Matter)
Many Eve Thread devices first shipped as HomeKit-only and can be upgraded in the Eve app: Settings, Accessories, pick the device, then Upgrade to Matter. Eve says it takes about 10 minutes and the device must stay powered (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
- Requirements: an iPhone or iPad on the latest iOS/iPadOS and an Apple home hub (HomePod 2nd gen, HomePod mini or a listed Apple TV 4K) (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
- One way: you cannot go back to HomeKit afterwards (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
- New code: a Matter Setup Code replaces the HomeKit code. It is the only way to add the device again after a reset, and the Eve app lets you AirDrop, email, save or print it. Save it straight away (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
- Optional for Apple users: Eve says Apple-only homes do not need to upgrade (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
- Which devices: Eve lists Eve Energy, Door & Window, Light Switch (US and Canada), Motion, MotionBlinds, Shutter Switch, Thermo and Weather. Wi-Fi Eve devices stay HomeKit-only (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).
Eve’s support FAQ says that if a device migrated to Matter cannot be added back, reset it and use the Matter Setup Code generated during the upgrade; Apple Home needs iCloud and iCloud Keychain turned on (Eve: Support and Matter FAQ).
Add Eve to Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings too
A Matter device can be shared with a second platform from the first one. In Apple Home, Eve’s steps are (Eve: Support and Matter FAQ):
- Press and hold the accessory tile and choose Accessory Details.
- Tap the settings gear, then Turn on Pairing Mode.
- Enter the setup code Apple Home shows in the second platform’s app.
The second platform needs its own Matter controller from Eve’s hub list (Eve: Compatible hubs). Which platform should you build around? See our smart home compatibility checker.
Thread range: why plugged-in Eve devices help
Eve explains that mains-powered devices that are always on, such as Eve Energy and Eve Light Switch, are Full Thread Devices that act as router nodes and relay traffic, so more of them make the network more stable and extend its reach (Eve: Eve Energy support, Eve: Eve Light Switch support). Battery devices such as Eve Motion and Eve Door & Window are Minimal Thread Devices, endpoints that do not relay (Eve: Eve Motion support, Eve: Eve Door & Window support).
| Eve device | Power | Thread role |
|---|---|---|
| Eve Energy | Plug-in | Full Thread Device, relays (Eve: Eve Energy support) |
| Eve Light Switch (US and Canada) | Wired, neutral required | Full Thread Device, relays (Eve: Eve Light Switch support) |
| Eve Motion | 2 AAA batteries | Endpoint (Eve: Eve Motion support) |
| Eve Door & Window | ½ AA ER14250 battery | Endpoint (Eve: Eve Door & Window support) |
So a sensor at the far end of the house that keeps dropping is a good spot for an Eve Energy halfway between it and the hub. For sensor options from other brands, see the best Matter and Thread sensors.
How to reset Eve devices
- Eve Energy: plug it in and press the reset button until the LED flashes red (Eve: Eve Energy support).
- Eve Motion: press the reset button inside the battery door with a paper clip until the red LED blinks 5 times (Eve: Eve Motion support).
- Eve Door & Window: press the reset button inside the battery door with a paper clip until the red LED blinks (Eve: Eve Door & Window support).
- Eve Light Switch (2nd and 3rd gen): Eve’s page shows a two-finger press on the button until the yellow LED lights up; follow the full steps there (Eve: Eve Light Switch support).
Before resetting a Matter-upgraded device, make sure you have its Matter Setup Code, or you will not be able to add it back (Eve: Upgrade to Matter).

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Eve device say No Response?
The device has lost its link to the hub. Eve suggests unplugging it or removing its batteries for a minute, rebooting all hubs and Thread border routers, waiting 5 minutes and restarting your phone without a VPN or iCloud Private Relay.
Do Eve devices need a hub?
Yes. Eve’s Matter devices need a hub that is a Matter controller and a Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub (2nd gen), a compatible Echo or an eero 6 or newer.
Does Eve have a cloud or a bridge?
No. Eve says there is no Eve cloud and no bridge; Thread devices work locally through your hub.
Can I undo the Upgrade to Matter?
No. Eve says you cannot go back to HomeKit after upgrading, and the upgrade is optional if you only use Apple Home.
I reset my Eve device and the HomeKit code doesn’t work. Why?
After an Upgrade to Matter, the Matter Setup Code saved in the Eve app replaces the HomeKit code and is the only way to add the device again.
Can Eve work with Alexa and Google Home at the same time as Apple Home?
Yes, with Matter. In Apple Home, open the accessory’s details, turn on pairing mode and enter the code in the other platform’s app. That platform needs its own Matter controller.
Do Eve sensors extend the Thread network?
No. Battery devices like Eve Motion and Eve Door & Window are endpoints. Plugged-in devices like Eve Energy and Eve Light Switch relay traffic and extend coverage.
How do I reset Eve Energy?
Plug it in and press the reset button until the LED flashes red.
