Nanoleaf Troubleshooting: Wi-Fi, Thread, Matter and Reset

Nanoleaf makes two very different kinds of lights, and they fail in different ways. Essentials Matter bulbs and some lightstrips run on Thread, so they depend on a Thread border router in your home. Shapes, Lines, Elements and the newer HD lightstrips run on Wi-Fi, so they depend on your router’s 2.4 GHz network and its settings (Nanoleaf: Connectivity FAQ, Nanoleaf: Paired but not staying connected). This guide follows Nanoleaf’s own support pages: first work out which kind you have, then use the matching fixes, the Matter pairing tips and the reset steps for each product line.

Fix Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs, lightstrips, Shapes and Lines that won't pair or show not responding: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi needs, Thread border routers, Matter pairing windows and reset steps, from Nanoleaf support.

Quick answers

Thread or Wi-Fi: which Nanoleaf do you have?

The fix depends on how the light connects. In short:

Product lineHow it connectsWhat it depends on
Essentials Matter bulbs and Matter LightstripMatter over Thread, plus Bluetooth for the Nanoleaf appA Matter hub that is also a Thread border router (Nanoleaf: Matter Lightstrip Smarter Kit)
Essentials HD lightstrip (Matter over Wi-Fi)Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Matter over Wi-FiYour 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and router settings (Nanoleaf: Paired but not staying connected)
Shapes, Elements, CanvasWi-Fi; Shapes and Elements controllers can also act as a Thread border routerYour 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (Nanoleaf: Restricted router and hotspot mode)
LinesWi-FiYour 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (Nanoleaf: Reset guide for panel products)

Nanoleaf lists the HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Echo (4th gen) as examples of Matter hubs that double as Thread border routers, and notes that for control from the Nanoleaf app alone only Bluetooth is needed (Nanoleaf: Matter Lightstrip Smarter Kit). New to the terms? Our Matter vs Thread explainer and glossary cover them.

Fix Thread lights that say not responding

Nanoleaf’s steps for Essentials Thread devices that show not responding or unreachable (Nanoleaf: Thread devices unreachable, Nanoleaf: Thread devices not responding in Apple Home):

  1. Update your border routers and your phone’s software, and keep the Nanoleaf firmware and app up to date.
  2. Unplug every Thread border router for at least 2 minutes, plug them back in, then allow up to 30 minutes for the Thread network to re-form.
  3. In Apple Home, check Home Settings, then Home Hubs & Bridges, and make sure one hub shows as Active.
  4. In the Nanoleaf app, open More (•••), then Thread Network, to see which devices have joined.
  5. If a light is connected only over Bluetooth, switch it off for 1 minute and back on so it can move to Thread.
  6. Make sure IPv6 is enabled on your router.

If the problem is your border router rather than the lights, see our Thread border router guide and Apple Home hub fixes.

Fix Wi-Fi Nanoleaf devices that won’t connect or keep dropping

Nanoleaf lists these router requirements for its Wi-Fi and Matter over Wi-Fi devices (Nanoleaf: Paired but not staying connected):

If a device pairs but won’t stay connected, Nanoleaf suggests checking that UPnP, multicast and IGMP snooping are on and client or AP isolation is off, and trying a fixed channel of 1, 6 or 11 instead of auto (Nanoleaf: Paired but not staying connected). Its general advice is to power-cycle the device for 10 seconds, restart the router, update firmware and move the device away from interference (Nanoleaf: Connectivity FAQ). A Wi-Fi device can only be paired to one network at a time (Nanoleaf: Reset Essentials lightstrips and other lights).

If other devices in the house drop too, the problem is likely the network itself; see why Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting.

No usable Wi-Fi? Hotspot mode for panels

Canvas, Shapes and Elements can broadcast their own Wi-Fi so you can control them from the Nanoleaf app without your router. Hold the Rhythm and Power buttons for 30 seconds until all the controller buttons flash five times, join the “Nanoleaf Shapes ####” style network on your phone, then add the device in the app with its pairing code (Nanoleaf: Restricted router and hotspot mode).

Hotspot mode has limits: no voice assistants, no Nanoleaf cloud account, no new scenes from the Discover tab and no firmware updates (Nanoleaf: Restricted router and hotspot mode). Treat it as a workaround, not a permanent setup.

Matter pairing tips

To use the same light in a second platform, share it from the first platform’s Matter settings; our compatibility checker shows which platforms work together.

How to reset Nanoleaf devices

Delete the device from the Nanoleaf app (and your smart home app) before you reset it (Nanoleaf: Reset guide for panel products, Nanoleaf: Reset Essentials lightstrips and other lights).

Nanoleaf lights worth considering

Details come from Nanoleaf’s pages and the Amazon listings. When we checked on October 27, 2026, all three were in stock, new, and sold by Amazon.com or Nanoleaf.

Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 bulb, 3-pack (Thread)

A Matter-over-Thread bulb that the Nanoleaf app can control over Bluetooth. For Matter in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings you need a Thread border router. Nanoleaf says to keep these bulbs on an ordinary switch left on, not a smart switch or dimmer (Nanoleaf: Reset Essentials bulbs, Nanoleaf: Matter Lightstrip Smarter Kit).

Nanoleaf Essentials Matter HD lightstrip, 5 m (Wi-Fi)

A strip that uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with Matter over Wi-Fi, so it depends on your 2.4 GHz network rather than a Thread border router (Nanoleaf: Paired but not staying connected, Nanoleaf: Reset Essentials lightstrips and other lights).

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Nanoleaf say not responding?

For Thread lights, it has usually lost its border router. Nanoleaf suggests unplugging your border routers for at least 2 minutes and waiting up to 30 minutes for the Thread network to re-form. For Wi-Fi lights, check that it is on a 2.4 GHz WPA/WPA2 network.

Does Nanoleaf work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Nanoleaf’s Wi-Fi devices need a 2.4 GHz network.

Do Nanoleaf Essentials need a hub?

Not for the Nanoleaf app, which can control them over Bluetooth. To use Matter with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings, Thread models need a Matter hub that is also a Thread border router.

My Nanoleaf Matter code doesn’t work. What now?

The pairing window may have expired. Nanoleaf says to power-cycle the device for about 10 seconds instead of resetting it, then try the code again.

How do I reset a Nanoleaf Essentials bulb?

Leave it on for 10 seconds, then switch it off for 3 seconds and on for under 1 second, four times. Three red blinks confirm the reset.

How do I reset Nanoleaf Shapes?

Hold Power and + on the controller for about 15 seconds until the LEDs flash, then wait for the Power LED to stay steady. Your scenes stay saved.

Can Nanoleaf Shapes act as a Thread border router?

Yes. Nanoleaf’s Shapes and Elements controllers can act as Thread border routers for its Thread lights.

Can I use Nanoleaf bulbs with a smart dimmer switch?

Nanoleaf says Essentials bulbs don’t work with smart switches or dimmers.
