Firmware
Firmware is the built-in software that runs a device such as a router, camera, hub or smart plug.
What it means for you
Updates fix bugs and security problems and sometimes add features, so turn on automatic updates where the maker offers them. Devices that no longer receive updates, like the Wemo products covered in our guide, are worth planning to replace.
