Best Smart Water Leak Detectors with Freeze Alerts
A slow drip under a sink or a pipe that freezes on the first cold night can do a lot of damage before anyone notices. A small smart sensor sends an alert to your phone and sounds an alarm at the first sign of water, and some also warn you when a room gets cold enough for pipes to freeze. This guide covers what to look for, where to put sensors and three kits worth considering.

What to look for in a leak detector
- A temperature reading if you worry about freezing. Leak-only sensors stay silent until water appears. A sensor with a low-temperature alert gives you warning while there is still time to add heat.
- A loud local alarm. An app alert is easy to miss; a sounder helps when you are home but not looking at your phone.
- How it connects. Wi-Fi sensors need a 2.4 GHz signal where they sit, which can be weak in a basement or garage. Hub-based sensors use their own radio to reach a hub plugged in near your router, which often reaches farther.
- Drip and floor detection. Probes on top or on the front catch drips from a pipe above; probes underneath catch water spreading across the floor.
- Working temperature range. Check the lowest temperature the sensor is built for before you put it in an unheated space. Not every sensor that warns about freezing is designed to sit in freezing air.
- Alert options. Text messages and phone calls help when someone else should know too, such as a neighbor watching the house while you travel.
Where to put leak and freeze sensors
- Under sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms, near the supply lines and drain.
- Next to the water heater and any water softener or filter.
- Behind or beside the washing machine, near the hoses.
- By the sump pump and the main water line where it enters the house.
- Near pipes on outside walls, in a crawl space or in an unheated garage, using a sensor with a temperature alert that is built for that cold.
- Test each one. Touch the probes with a damp cloth after setup to confirm you get the alarm and the phone alert.
Sensor not connecting in the basement or garage? Weak Wi-Fi is the usual cause; see how to fix Wi-Fi dead zones. Many sensors and gateways only join 2.4 GHz networks, so our smart device network guide can help too.

Gear worth considering
Each pick is matched to the maker’s model number. Specifications come from YoLink’s, Moen’s and Govee’s own product pages and spec sheets, checked November 1, 2026. We have not tested any of these products, and we do not quote prices because they change often.
Best overall for leaks plus freeze warnings: YoLink Water Leak Sensor 4 kit (3 sensors + hub)
A battery sensor that watches for water two ways: electrodes on top catch drips from a pipe or tank above, and electrodes on the bottom catch water pooling on the floor. YoLink lists a built-in sounder you can turn on for a local alarm (this kit is sold as the 105 dB alarm version), plus a configurable low-temperature warning in the YoLink app to flag conditions that can lead to frozen pipes. Each sensor runs on two AAA alkaline batteries, is IP66 and is specified for 32°F to 122°F, so it suits basements, laundry rooms and under sinks rather than an unheated crawl space. The included hub is required for app alerts; YoLink uses its long-range LoRa radio, which helps in a detached garage or far corner of a basement. YoLink also lists Alexa, IFTTT and Home Assistant integrations.

Best for cold spaces and no hub: Moen Flo Smart Water Detector (920-004)
A Wi-Fi detector that connects straight to a 2.4 GHz network, so there is no hub. Moen lists alerts for water, humidity and room temperature, with customizable temperature alerts, sent by app notification, text, phone call or email, plus an audible alarm and LED on the unit. Moen’s spec sheet lists a working range of -20°F to 140°F, which makes it the pick here for a chilly garage or crawl space where pipes freeze first. A 48-inch remote sensing cable is included so the detector can sit up on a wall while the sensor sits on the floor. It runs on one CR123A lithium battery that Moen says lasts up to two years, and it can work with Moen’s Flo Smart Water Shutoff (sold separately) to turn off the water.

Budget pick for leaks only: Govee Wi-Fi Water Sensor (gateway + 3 sensors)
A low-cost way to cover several spots at once. Three battery sensors talk to a small gateway that joins your Wi-Fi, and Govee lists up to 10 sensors per gateway. Each sensor has a loud alarm of up to 100 dB with adjustable volume and a mute button, is IP66 and has probes that catch dripping water as well as puddles. Alerts arrive in the Govee Home app and by email. The gateway works on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. This kit does not report temperature, so it will not warn you about freezing; pair it with one of the picks above if frozen pipes are a worry.

Frequently asked questions
Can a water leak sensor warn me before pipes freeze?
Some can. Sensors with a temperature reading, such as the YoLink Water Leak Sensor 4 and the Moen Flo Smart Water Detector, let you set a low-temperature alert so you can add heat or open cabinet doors before a pipe freezes. Leak-only sensors, such as the Govee kit in this guide, only react once water is already on the floor.
What temperature should I set a freeze alert to?
Set it a few degrees above freezing so you have time to act, for example around 40°F for a sensor near pipes on an outside wall. Check how far the temperature drops on a cold night first, then adjust so you are not woken by alerts that are not urgent.
Do smart leak detectors need a hub?
It depends on the brand. YoLink needs its own hub, which is included in the kit in this guide. Govee uses a small Wi-Fi gateway that comes in the box. The Moen Flo detector connects straight to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with no hub.
Where should I put water leak sensors?
Put them where water shows up first: under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, behind the toilet, next to the water heater, under the washing machine hoses, near the sump pump and by the main water line. For freeze warnings, put a sensor with a temperature reading near pipes on outside walls, in a crawl space or in an unheated garage.
Will a leak sensor still alarm if my Wi-Fi or internet is down?
The local sounder on each of these picks works on its own, so you will hear it if you are home. Phone, text and email alerts need the hub or gateway and your internet connection to be working. If outages are common, see our guide to keeping the modem and router on a battery backup.
Can a leak sensor shut off my water?
Not on its own. The Moen Flo detector can work with Moen’s Flo Smart Water Shutoff, a separate valve installed on your main line. YoLink also sells valve controllers. Installing a shutoff valve is plumbing work, so ask a plumber if you are unsure.
