How we chose

This is a research-based shortlist, not a hands-on test. We have not set these cameras up with pets or measured their detection accuracy. Instead, we:

What matters for indoor and pet cameras

Pet detection and tracking

Basic motion alerts fire for sunlight changes and curtains as well as pets. Pet detection labels the event so you can filter alerts, and auto tracking turns the camera to keep a moving animal in frame. Check whether tracking follows only people or pets too.

Privacy when people are home

An indoor camera sees your daily life, so look for a privacy mode that physically turns or hides the lens, not just a software switch. All four picks offer a privacy mode. Keep cameras out of bedrooms and bathrooms, and let household members and guests know where they are.

Night vision

Infrared night vision lets you check on a pet in the dark. Standard infrared LEDs glow faintly red; invisible 940 nm infrared avoids that glow, which can help in a room where a pet or child sleeps.

What the free tier really includes

Local recording is free on all four picks, but makers keep some features, such as cloud history, snapshot previews in notifications or smart search, for paid plans. Many pet-brand cameras work the same way, with alerts or video history tied to a subscription. Read the plan comparison in the app before you buy.

Tapo C260: best overall pet camera

Who it is for

Pet owners who want a capable all-rounder for the living room, and anyone who wants a visible guarantee that the camera is not watching.

Keep in mind

It does not list Apple HomeKit support; Apple Home users should look at the eufy E220 below. TP-Link's specs do not list an invisible-infrared mode. A microSD card is not included, so budget for one if you want recordings without a plan.

eufy Indoor Cam E220: best for Apple Home and flexible storage

Who it is for

Apple Home users and anyone who wants to keep recordings on their own storage, including a NAS, while watching pets in 2K.

Key specs from eufy

Keep in mind

eufy says video is limited to 1080p when streamed through Apple HomeKit, and that activity zones, pet commands and sound detection are not available in HomeKit, so you will still use the eufy app for full features. For HomeKit Secure Video requirements and other Apple Home options, see our HomeKit Secure Video cameras guide. Notifications with thumbnail previews temporarily store those images in eufy's cloud.

Who it is for

Larger rooms where you want to zoom in on a pet bed or doorway without losing detail, households with a crowded 2.4 GHz network, and anyone who wants 24/7 recording or a network video recorder.

Keep in mind

It is designed for indoor use only; Reolink says not to install it outdoors, even under an eave. Auto tracking only pans left and right, so mount it at a height where your pet stays within the tilt range.

eufy Indoor Cam E30: best 4K pan/tilt with color night vision

Who it is for

Anyone who wants whole-room coverage with sharp 4K video and pet tracking, plus a spotlight for color video in a dark room at night.

Key specs from eufy

Keep in mind

eufy says Apple Home and HomeBase 3 cannot be used with this camera at the same time, and it is not supported on HomeBase 2. It is a different product from the outdoor eufy SoloCam E30 and Floodlight Camera E30, so check the listing says Indoor Cam E30. The maximum card size is smaller than on the Tapo and Reolink picks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular indoor security camera as a pet camera?

Yes. Most pet owners mainly need a clear live view, two-way audio, alerts when the pet moves, and recordings to look back on. A pan/tilt indoor camera with pet detection and local storage covers that. What you give up compared with pet-brand cameras is extras such as treat tossing, which on many pet-brand models also come with optional subscription features.

Which of these cameras detect pets specifically?

According to the makers, all four picks offer pet detection: the Tapo C260, eufy Indoor Cam E220, Reolink E1 Zoom and eufy Indoor Cam E30. The eufy E30 can also automatically follow a pet as it moves.

Do I need a subscription to record video?

Not for these picks. Each records to a microSD card that you buy separately, and the makers offer cloud plans as optional extras. The Reolink E1 Zoom can also record to a Reolink NVR or Home Hub, and the eufy E220 to a NAS via RTSP. Check each app for which alert features are included without a plan.

Will a night-vision camera disturb my pet or baby?

Standard infrared night vision uses a faint red glow that some pets notice. Cameras with 940 nm invisible infrared avoid that glow; check the spec sheet if this matters to you. Based on the makers' specs, our picks use standard infrared.

Where should I put an indoor camera?

Cover shared spaces such as the living room, kitchen or the area where your pet spends the day, and keep the power cable out of reach of chewing pets. Avoid bedrooms and bathrooms, tell guests and household members about the camera, and use privacy mode when people are home.

Do indoor cameras work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Only some. The Reolink E1 Zoom supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6 and also has an Ethernet port, and the Tapo C260 supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The eufy E220 and eufy Indoor Cam E30 connect over 2.4 GHz only.
