Best Solar Security Cameras: Wire-Free Outdoor Picks With Local Storage
If the spot you want to watch has no outlet, such as a side gate, shed, garage corner or back fence, a solar security camera can save you running cable or hiring an electrician. A small panel keeps a built-in battery topped up, and the camera records to local storage. This guide picks four solar camera options that record locally without a required subscription, and explains what really decides whether solar works at your home: sun, temperature, Wi-Fi and how often the camera records.
Quick answer
Four solar-powered outdoor security cameras that need no wiring and record locally without a required subscription, chosen from manufacturer specs, plus what sun, cold and Wi-Fi mean for solar.

How we chose
This is a research-based shortlist, not a hands-on test. We have not mounted these cameras, measured their solar charging or run them through a winter. Instead, we:
- limited the list to solar-capable cameras from established brands that were listed on Amazon.com when we checked in October 2026, choosing listings that include a solar panel;
- required local recording (microSD card or built-in storage) that the maker says works without a subscription;
- took specifications, sunlight figures and storage details from each manufacturer's own product or support pages;
- avoided repeating the solar picks from our no-subscription camera guide, so the two guides together cover more options;
- left out prices, because they change frequently, and did not summarize customer reviews.
What decides whether solar works for you
Direct sunlight at the panel
Maker sunlight figures assume direct sun in good conditions. A north-facing wall, a deep eave or a tree canopy can cut charging sharply. If the best camera spot is shaded, choose a kit whose panel can be mounted separately on a cable and placed in the sun.
Cold weather
Lithium-ion batteries generally should not be charged below freezing, and makers build that in: TP-Link says the Tapo SolarCam charges only above 32°F. In cold climates, the battery has to carry the camera through stretches without charging, so a larger battery helps.
How much the camera records
Battery life claims are usually based on a few minutes of recording per day. A camera that faces a busy street or swaying plants records far more often and drains faster. Use activity zones and person detection to cut unnecessary recordings. Continuous recording uses the most power by far.
Wi-Fi at the mounting spot
No wiring for power still means a wireless link to your router. Stand at the spot with your phone and check the signal before drilling. If it is weak, our guide to fixing Wi-Fi dead zones covers outdoor coverage and mesh placement.

Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT: best simple solar kit
Who it is for
Anyone who wants an affordable, straightforward wire-free camera for a driveway, shed, garden or vacation home, especially where the camera spot itself does not get much sun.
Key specs from TP-Link
- Video: 1080p (1920 × 1080) with color night vision using two spotlights, plus infrared night vision up to 30 ft.
- Power: built-in rechargeable battery and an included Tapo A201 solar panel; TP-Link says the panel can mount next to the camera or separately on a 13 ft cable, and that the battery provides up to 180 days of backup in its lab testing.
- Sunlight: TP-Link cites about 45 minutes of direct sunlight per day under standard lab conditions; charging requires temperatures above 32°F.
- Local storage: microSD card up to 512 GB (sold separately). Cloud: optional Tapo Care subscription, which adds notifications with snapshots and cloud video history.
- Detection: motion and person detection without a subscription; activity zones and privacy zones.
- Other: IP65 weather resistance, two-way audio, siren, Alexa and Google Assistant support; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; no hub required.
Keep in mind
At 1080p, it captures less detail than the higher-resolution cameras here, so mount it closer to the area you care about most. TP-Link lists person detection only, not vehicle or animal detection.

eufy SoloCam S220: best all-in-one compact camera
Who it is for
People who want the tidiest possible install: one small unit, one mount and no separate panel or memory card, on a wall that gets direct sun.
Key specs from eufy
- Video: 2K with infrared (black-and-white) night vision; 135° field of view.
- Power: battery with a built-in solar panel; eufy says about 3 hours of daily sunlight keeps it running.
- Local storage: built-in 8 GB eMMC; eufy lists no monthly fee. It does not support NAS or RTSP.
- Detection: on-device human detection and up to 2 activity zones. Pairing with eufy HomeBase 3 (HomeBase S380) adds face recognition.
- Other: IP67 weather resistance, two-way audio, siren, Alexa and Google Assistant support; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
Keep in mind
Because the panel is part of the camera, the camera itself must be mounted where it gets direct sun. There is no spotlight or color night vision. 8 GB fills faster than a large memory card, so older clips are replaced sooner. eufy notes that notifications with thumbnail previews temporarily store those images in the cloud.

Reolink Altas PT Ultra: best for continuous recording without wiring
Who it is for
Larger yards, driveways and properties where you want to cover a wide area from one camera, follow movement automatically, and record more than short motion clips, without running power.
Key specs from Reolink
- Video: 4K (3840 × 2160) with color night vision; 355° pan and 90° tilt with auto tracking.
- Power: 20,000 mAh rechargeable battery; compatible with Reolink Solar Panel 2 (6 W). The Amazon listing linked below includes a solar panel.
- Recording: motion, scheduled and continuous recording; the Amazon listing describes up to 10 seconds of pre-recording before a motion event.
- Local storage: microSD card up to 512 GB (sold separately); the listing also says it works with Reolink Home Hub with no monthly fees. Cloud: optional Reolink Cloud, available in selected countries.
- Detection: person, vehicle and animal detection, plus PIR motion sensing.
- Connection: dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).
- Other: IP65 weather resistance, two-way audio, Google Assistant support; operating temperature -4°F to 131°F.
Keep in mind
Continuous recording runs the battery much harder: the Amazon listing says up to about 4 days of continuous or pre-recording on a full charge, and about 5 hours of direct sun a day to sustain pre-recording with the 6 W panel. It is also a large, heavy camera compared with the others here, so plan a solid mounting surface.

Wyze Solar Cam Pan 2K: best pan-and-tilt solar camera
Who it is for
Yards and driveways where one camera needs to cover a wide area by turning to follow people, and anyone who wants the solar panel built into the camera instead of on a separate cable.
Key specs from Wyze
- Video: 2K (2394 × 1296) with color night vision and a 100-lumen spotlight; 8× digital zoom.
- Movement: 360° pan and 70° tilt; Wyze's Amazon listing says AI detection tracks people automatically.
- Power: integrated 1.8 W solar panel and a built-in 6,400 mAh battery that is not removable; Wyze lists battery life of up to 2 to 6 months when not connected to power.
- Local storage: microSD card up to 512 GB (sold separately). Cloud: optional Wyze subscription.
- Other: IP65 weather resistance, 105 dB siren, two-way audio, Bluetooth setup, Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT support; Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz.
Keep in mind
Because the panel sits on top of the camera, the camera itself has to be mounted where the panel gets sun. Wyze says AI alerts for people, pets, packages and vehicles need its Cam Plus plan. Wyze also notes that the Solar Cam Pan 2K is the updated model and is not part of the earlier voluntary recall of certain original Solar Cam Pan units, so check that the listing says 2K.

Installation tips for solar cameras
- Panel first: find where the panel gets the most direct sun through the day, then place the camera within cable reach. In the Northern Hemisphere, a south-facing, unshaded spot usually works best.
- Angle the panel: tilt it toward the sun rather than laying it flat, and clear snow, leaves and dust from it.
- Camera height: mount high enough to discourage tampering, angled slightly down.
- Charge before mounting: start with a full battery so the panel only has to keep it topped up.
- Tune detection: set activity zones, turn on person detection and avoid pointing at roads or moving branches to save battery.
- Secure the account: turn on two-factor authentication in the camera app and keep firmware updated.
- Respect privacy: point cameras at your own property and check local rules on recording audio and video.

Frequently asked questions
Do solar security cameras work in winter or cloudy weather?
They keep running on their built-in battery when there is little sun, but charging slows. Makers also limit charging in the cold: TP-Link says the Tapo SolarCam charges only above 32°F, and Reolink's Altas PT Ultra listing ties its pre-recording solar claim to temperatures above 32°F. In long, dark winters, expect to top the battery up with a USB charger occasionally, especially if the camera sees a lot of motion.
How much sun does a solar security camera need?
It depends on the camera and how often it records. Maker figures range from about 45 minutes of direct sunlight a day for the Tapo SolarCam in lab conditions, to about 3 hours for the eufy SoloCam S220 and around 5 hours for the Reolink Altas PT Ultra when it is pre-recording all day. Treat these as best-case numbers and mount the panel where it gets direct, unshaded sun for several hours.
Can a solar camera record 24/7?
A few can, but it uses far more power. Reolink says the Altas PT Ultra supports continuous recording to a microSD card and lasts up to about 4 days on a full charge in that mode. Most solar cameras are designed to record on motion.
Do solar security cameras need Wi-Fi?
The cameras in this guide connect to your home Wi-Fi for setup, live view and phone alerts. Outdoor spots are often at the edge of your router's range, so check the signal before you drill. The Tapo SolarCam, eufy SoloCam S220 and Wyze Solar Cam Pan 2K use 2.4 GHz; the Reolink Altas PT Ultra also supports 5 GHz.
Do I need a subscription for a solar camera?
Not for the picks in this guide: each records locally to a microSD card or built-in storage, and the makers offer cloud plans as optional extras. What the free tier includes varies. For example, Wyze says AI alerts for people, pets, packages and vehicles come with its Cam Plus plan.
Can I move the solar panel away from the camera?
With some models. TP-Link includes a 13 ft cable with the Tapo SolarCam kit so the panel can sit in the sun while the camera stays in the shade. The eufy SoloCam S220 and Wyze Solar Cam Pan 2K have their solar panels built into the camera, so the camera itself must face the sun.
